What is an assignment?
Webster’s dictionary defines the word assignment in 3 ways.
- The act of assigning something
- a position or post that one is assigned
- a task or amount of work undertaken by order of authority.
To clearly understand the word assignment we must go back to the root word, assign, which means: a transfer of property to be held in trust or for the benefit of creditors.
Further, let us define creditor, which Webster’s defines as: one who has a just claim to services, a sum of money or other thing by obligation, promise or in law.
When we break down the word assignment and 
take the time to embrace what it really means, we see an assignment is not only our responsibility to complete what God, our Authority, gave us to undertake. It is also our gift to share with those who do not understand they are already credited with the same claim and promise of the love of God we ourselves have received as followers of Jesus Christ!!!!
Sadly, today many students across public schools and universities are being taught they are basically nothing and merely a product of “ time and circumstance”. This is defined as Nihilism and unfortunately is the outcome of the progressive movement that attempts to re-engineer human nature as God created us!
We don’t have to look far to confirm this lie. Our society is dominated by drug addiction and suicide. And, we wonder why it has has escalated so rampantly?
Opioids and other drugs that have lured our youth, (who have been taught they are basically nothing), into the deception of escape, and quickly attaches it’s tentacles of addictive destruction. Ultimately they believe the lie of: why does it matter? And, usually are unable to successfully eviscerate their lives from addiction before it is too late.
Getting back to our assignment, the Bible tells us in Jeremiah 1:5 the God knew us before we were born. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you”.
Webster’s defines consecrated as: “separated from a common to a sacred use; devoted or dedicated to the service and worship of God; made venerable.” If you are separated and set aside for dedicated service, you have been given a talent and special assignment for your life.
This applies to both the believer and to those who know nothing about God yet! He made us all the same way but gave each of us different gifts. Also, according to Acts 10:34 “ God is not one to show partiality “. He does not respect people differently due to their educational, financial or social standings. We are all equal in God’s sight.
According to Psalm 139: 13-14 the psalmist wrote: “For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.”
So, where do we begin our assignment? If we believe that we are created by the God of the Universe, then we also believe He has instilled His message of love and hope not only for us to hold on to, but to share it somehow with every person we come in contact with every day. We can each learn to love the unlovely, share a smile, and a kind, encouraging word.
God gave each of us the gift of speech and the ability to communicate. The gifts and talents we are given will grow and multiply if we willingly start planting seeds of obedience and treat ALL others as God treats us. With love, kindness and gentle direction, spoken in truth like Jesus did. Luke 6:31. “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.”
Lastly, in Romans 11: 29-30 Paul wrote that the gifts and callings of God are irrevocable and without repentance. The Amplified Bible says it like this: “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable [for He does not withdraw what He has given, nor does He change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call]. 30 Just as you once were disobedient and failed to listen to God, but have now obtained mercy because of their disobedience.”
We all have extremely unique talents and are called for a specific purpose, only assigned to us. The bottom line is what are we going to do with these gifts? I guess we can put them on a shelf and wonder what treasures lie in the boxes? Or, we can step up, open the gifts and follow the directions in the box!
As we watch this closing scene from “ A Bronx Tale” a movie about the 1960’s civil rights unrest we hear the resounding truth…
“ learn to give love and get love unconditionally, to accept people for what they are, and the greatest gift of all, the saddest thing is life is wasted talent! And, the choices that you make will shape your life forever! “
I close with this passage from Proverbs 3:3-4: “ Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man.”
